Cultural Photography

The reason I chose the photos.

PHOTO 1: I chose the first photos because the phone represents internet culture and how in the current world we live in, phones and the internet have become an important aspect of culture.

PHOTO 2: I chose a Christmas Stocking because it’s part of my catholic culture and also celebrating holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas is a part of American culture.

PHOTO 3: My family comes from india and that is why I chose an  indian  food.    It’s like  a  tortilla or pancake and can be eaten at any time of the day.

What is Cultural Photography? – Read and Write

The photographer in the article was trying to find a way to tell people what type of photography he did for a living. He was confused what to tell people when they would ask what type of photography they did for a living. The photographer does cultural photography and likes to take photos from a personal point of view and not an objective. Culture photography can be done anywhere including in cities. Most people associate cultural photography with remote culture such as tribal culture.

Cultural photography is a mix of many different types of photographies. Some of the different photographies that make up cultural  photography include ducumentary photography, portrait photography, landscape photography, street photography, and architectual photography. The photographer in the text pitched a photography project to NatGeo about japanese culture. NatGeo refused the idea only because they wanted the project to be in color but the photogrpaher wanted to show japanese culture from a different perspective by shooting the images in black and white only. Cultural photography is not limited to color and thus can be done in black and white too.

The photographer in the article wanted to become a part of the culture he was gonna photograph before taking the photos to understand the culture better and have experience. According to the photographer in the text it is very slow process to learn and integrate in the culture, it can take multiple years. According to the photographer in the text if he took the photos as an outsider without knowing a lot about the culture or without integrating into it then he wouldn’t be able to capture the right image from a cultural perspective without properly understanding the culture. After years of integrating to the  Zen Buddhist culture, the photographer finally took images with alot of imagery about the culture such as environment, architecture, and much more. According to the photographer you should “experience first, photography second”. In my opinion cultural photography is a way to show and celebrate other people’s cultures from around the world, or even other cultures such as video game culture, and pop culture. Not only is cultural photography a great way to see other people’s culture it is also a great way to learn about other cultures as that can open more perspectives, as other people from different cultures might have different perspectives on the same things in life. Cultural photography is a form of photography that allows one photo to relay 1000 words or more.

History Of Photography Timeline

The 2 inventions in photography that impact my life
1) The invention of color film was important to avoid images being black and white only.
2) The invention of phone cameras which allows us to have really good cameras in our pockets.

Favorite Teacher Portrait

The teacher that I admire is my digital photography teacher, Ms. Cauchon. I admire her because she is really kind and nice. She also is very helpful as she always helps students when they need help. She will help students even if the thing they need help with is small or something she already went over. She also makes learning photography and being a photographer very easy and fun.

Ms. Cauchon also is very generous relating to grades. She doesn’t count the grades of things you missed against your grade most of the time. For example, last semester I was absent for a long time and she still gave me a C+ for effort because I tried to learn how to use a camera and how to make a website. She also gives assignments that are very fun to do. The best assignments she gives are the ones where you take alot of photos and then get to edit them on your own ,the way you want in different ways.

Some of the assignments from photography class given by her that are my favorite are the advertising assignment by using strobes, and the 50 photos assignment. I loved the the advertising assignment because we got to use a professional lighting setup to get great images that look like real ads.I also loved the 50 photos assignment she gave us because the assignment required us to take alot of great photos and edit each of them in many different ways. One other thing that I like about Ms. Cauchon is that she gives us demonstrations of new things instead of just telling about them with words and then handing us the equipment. For example, she gave us tutorial on how to use strobes, external flash on camera, photoshop, lightroom, and etc. Overall, I think Ms. Cauchon is a great teacher and she shouldn’t change her ways and remain the same amount of generous, kind, helpful, fun, and educational.

Photo with External Flash vs Natural light

Natural Light vs Flash Photography — Lightness Photography

Contrasts: In the photo taken with flash the whites look more balanced and have more detail in them. The background is also less bright and dimmer in the photo taken with the external flash.

similarities: In both photos the subjects face has been highlighted and isn’t over or under exposed.
